GASTRO at The OLD GLEN HOUSE

Category: £20 - £30
Recently The Old Glen House in Baildon has been raised in conversation many times, mainly by me. About a year ago my secretary reviewed this then fully refurbished pub and restaurant, on her return she sang its praises. I took little notice as in my mind it was a shabby run down pub serving poor food. Then about 6 months ago we ran a Sunday lunch feature, featuring 12 different venues, I choose The Old Glen House.
It was that good that I decided that enough time had passed and I would review the evening faryre.
We booked for Thursday 26th January. Unbeknown to us they were celebraiting Burns night, as they have a speciality food thymed night the last Thursday of every month.
The place was packed, people were really getting in to the spirit of it, with kilts on supported by sporrens, you get the picture.
The food was all I expected and much much more. In fact the food here is with out a doubt the best value for money gourmet food (in my opinion) in West Yorkshire. Not only excellent value but amazing food.
For starters my partner had traditional Scotch Broth. Outstanding. This was a meal in its self, her bowl was left clean. I had seared Haggis, wilted spinach and a poached egg (which was nice and hot, trust me, to get a hot poached egg in any restaurant is a coup). There is no superlative to describe how good this was.
Our mains were Aberdeen Angus rib-eye steak, Haggis mash, with a strong wild mushroom broth and Seared Fillet of fresh Cod, sweet potato chips and a crispy bacon and shallot sauce. Again, at the risk of been boring, faultless and amazing. The cod was pure white and the size of a good fillet steak.
We shared traditional Dundee cake with clotted cream . Not my thing although my partner loved it and said it was authentic - as was the whole meal (She did live in Dundee for a few years, so who am I to argue?).
The cost of this meal was only £23:50/head + drinks. To say the place is contempory yet still retaining a traditional feel and decorated to very high standards, with good service, a good atmosphere and incredibly good food, £23:50 is superb.
And yes, it did include fresh coffee with a traditional scotch tablet!
