Cellar V, Guiseley

Cellar V in Guiseley is a strange place, in the fact that it is tucked away behind Morrison’s and you have to drive through Morrison’s car park to get to it.
Cellar V is a mixture of a wine bar and a bistro, whether you want a breakfast, brunch or bistro style meal this place seems to do it all. They even do a healthy range.

On a night I would see Cellar V as more of a bar than a restaurant, however many people do eat there of an evening, I think the early bird is a big hit with a lot of people.

The place is very eclectic in the fact that you will see a real cross section of society, there is of course the Tranmere crowd, you know the ones. My boobs cost more than hers. Then you get average Joe and I suppose a few blue collar workers. Whilst we were eating I listened in to a few conversations to get a feel for the locals. We were surrounded by teachers, a business woman and some local off duty police.

Cellar V is without doubt a place that ladies lunch and indeed nice people frequent - the atmosphere is bustling with people chatting and laughing and I have to say, as a non smoker, the air conditioning and ventilation is very good.

For diners there is a non-smoking area at the end of the room, it is slightly raised from the rest of the room, which I like as I enjoy people watching and this place is ideal for this fantastic pastime.

I really like the food in here, however the menu is too extensive and does not appear to know quite what direction to take. Four of us were dining when I reviewed Cellar V, however by the time we had finished there were seven in our party, showing that it is a place where people just drop in for a light brunch and a catch up.

To start we ordered:
Home made Pate with salad and toast………………£3.5
Home made Thai fishcakes with pineapple and cucumber salad with sweet chilli jam………………£6.25
Home made Tomato and Basil soup………………..£2.95
Duck rolls on a light chilli salad with plum sauce……£6.26

All were really good, especially the Pate, the Duck rolls were slightly over done but more than acceptable.

To press, the service was out standing with a flurry of attractive waitresses attending to our every whim, nothing was too much trouble.  I felt a little overwhelmed as I expect this kind of service in the best venues only. Don’t get me wrong, it was not yes sir no sir, they had the kind of manner you would expect from a bistro style restaurant. Happy and efficient but light hearted is the best way I could describe them.

The gap between the starters and mains was about right as we were all chatting and did not notice time go by.

The mains were:
King prawns in sweet chilli sauce……………………..£9.95
Tagliatelle in creamy lobster sauce with smoked Salmon and prawns……………………………………. £6.95
Pan fried medallions of fillet steak with fried onions topped with melted cheese……………………………. £6.50
Pork fillet wrapped in Parma ham with honey and Walnut sauce……………………………………………£8.95
Cellar V burger with chilli………………………………£6.40

Most of the above was served with garnish and game chips and trust me these dishes were huge. Beware; the portions are massive, in fact, order to share and this place is extremely good value.

The puddings (all £2.95)

Sticky toffee Pavlova
Rhubarb and strawberry crumble, Apple and blackberry pie and Chocolate and cappuccino mousse asl served with ice cream, cream or custard. The girls were in heaven; in fact it was the first time they were quiet all the meal.

All in all I rate this place for lunch and early evening, the staff are particularly friendly and the venue is quite cool. It does have a feel more of a bar than an eatery, but only just and the food is excellent value especially if you share one portion and you can here and still be satisfied.
