Fish & Chips in the Park at Ilkley Riverside Hotel

If you’re stuck for somewhere to go for Fish & Chips, why not have a ride out to Ilkley’s Riverside Hotel Fish & Chip Cabin and enjoy a tranquil meal watching the world go by.

Tranquil might not be the right word as you can either sit by the river watching the ducks splashing about (trying not to feed them your chips) or look out over the park where children play happily safely away from the hustle and bustle of the main town.  They also have, in the summer months, a track with bumping cars for the little ones.

Ian and I decided to go one Sunday afternoon to try out the famous fish & chips and the setting impressed us, not having ventured to this part of Ilkley before.  Nestled behind the Hotel, the Cabin serves the usual ‘Fish & Chip’ menu along with Jacket Potatoes and Chicken etc., hot and cold drinks and Ice Creams are also available.

The menu was tempting, but we were there to sample the Fish & Chips and to accompany them, we had Mushy Peas on the side.  The meal was served in a polystyrene lidded tray, easy to carry over to the tables behind the Cabin.  Opening the lid, the fish & chips looked appealing and a generous portion too.  The batter on the fish was light and golden just how batter should be and when I went in with my fork it slightly crunched with crispness.  The fish, Haddock, was delightful, large white flakes melted in my mouth and not a bone in sight.  The chips, lightly browned and not over or under cooked were possibly some of the best I’d tasted in a long time and the peas, well what can you say about mushy peas, they were the as good as you would expect.

The Cabin is open 364 days a year, 11.30am to 10.00pm in the summer and 11.30am to 7.00 in the winter months, yes you read it right, the only day it’s closed is Christmas Day.  I suppose the chef is allowed at least one day off a year!!

The ‘value for money’ aspect was good, fish & chips £3.10; half-Chicken £2.50 and the Jacket Potato price varied dependant on filling, the usual prices for take-away meals.

I would recommend everyone at some point visits the Riverside Hotel’s Cabin, to either spend a lunch hour escaping the toils of work or a lazy afternoon or evening enjoying fish & chips and a walk along the river.
