Vecchio Mulinio

Category: £20 - £30
A taste of Sardinia in Bingley…. Vecchio Mulino is far from a traditional ‘Italian Restaurant’, it’s a little corner of Sardinia nestled just off the main road in Bingley.
From the outside, it looks like any other small restaurant but when you enter, the atmosphere is warm and welcoming. Through the entrance is a small bar where you can have a pre-meal drink, then you go into the main restaurant, it’s small with only 24 covers but enough room not to be sat on the person next to you.
Graziano, the owner, greeted us and showed us to our table, he is very much ‘front of house’ and with the help of one waitress they look after the clientele effortlessly.
After perusing the menu, Ian and I had made our choices but then Ian changed his mind for the third time. Listening to Graziano with another couple ordering, nothing is too much trouble, if you like part of the dish but want something omitting or adding, this can be done because everything is cooked to order and 100% fresh, you can virtually have anything you want.
Whilst waiting for our meal, we were served with some home-made bread and butter, the smell of which made us even more hungry. For starters, Ian ordered Funghi All’aglio (Mushrooms in Garlic & Cream Sauce) whilst I chose Brodo del Pastore, (Shepherds Purse?) which Graziano explained was egg fried in oil with tomato sauce in a pancake, a Sardinian speciality. The starters came, Ian’s mushrooms were as expected and a very generous portion, whilst my ‘Shepherds Purse’ looked rather intriguing. Once I cut in to the pancake smothered with parmesan, the egg oozed out, not fried as you would expect but scrambled very light and fluffy and mixed with tomato sauce, delicious.
Then the mains came, Ian finally chose Spaghetti Bolognese, one of his favourites and he wasn’t disappointed. Whilst being more adventurous I ordered Gamberoni in Guazzetto, King Prawns (with shells on) served in Brandy & Tomato Sauce with a side order of roast potatoes and carrots. The Prawns, what can I say, they were out of this world. Well presented on a bed of green leaves and smothered in a rich tomato & herb sauce, this was one meal where you had to ‘play with your food’ very much ‘hands in’ rather than ‘hands on’!
True to form, when it came to dessert, I chose coffee whilst Ian had Chocolate Gateau. This was a little disappointing after the quality of the previous dishes as it was like a ‘shop bought’ gateau rather than home-made. However, this did not spoil the overall meal.
So, if you fancy going to Sardinia without leaving Yorkshire, try Vecchio Mulino I guarantee you won’t be disappointed.
