'One' at the Craiglands Hotel, Ilkley

craiglands hotelThe Craiglands was built in 1856 and was one of the largest and most finely situated purpose-built hydropathic establishments in the country. The beautiful grounds were laid out with special attention to the requirements of invalids during the summer season and included croquet, lawn tennis and a bowling alley. There was also a large recreational hall for indoor sports, public concerts and theatrical performances.

Today the complete package of guest care continues and everyone can still enjoy the six acres of beautiful grounds, breathtaking views and excellent food and service that the Craiglands have to offer.

As a guest at a recent wedding we experienced first hand what a perfect venue it is for your wedding day.  The room looked wonderful, the food and service was excellent and the bride, groom and guests were able to take some memorable pictures set in the beautiful grounds.

Our next visit however, was to sample what the ‘One’ restaurant has to offer.  We decided to try it mid week and booked easily for 7.30pm on a Wednesday.  We were greeted politely by the receptionist and shown the way to the library and bar where our waiter for evening was very courteous.  We opted to have a drink in the bar whilst we looked at the menu.  It’s a good mix of ‘traditional’ (Posh Smoked Salmon Sandwich) and ‘worldwide’ (Nachos) cuisine, and I liked that you were able to choose a large or small plate for your main course, as I often find three full courses is just too much.

We chose Baked Brie and a Balti Combo to start and were shown through to our table, which had a delightful view of the garden.  There were a few tables occupied but it was a peaceful dining experience, you can feel the ambiance of the place, it’s settled, it’s cosy.  Starters were well received and for our main course we chose the Rib Eye Steak and Sausages on Bubble & Squeak.  The steak was large for a ‘small’ plate, and tender; I was however, disappointed in the ‘House Fries’ and ‘Panache of Green Vegetables’ (much too over cooked for my taste).  The Sausages got a good report, the service was excellent and the bottle of Hardy’s ‘The Riddle’ went down very well.

For dessert were Sticky Toffee Pudding and Warm Treacle Tart with vanilla and ginger custard, followed by two lattes and then a relaxed stroll around the wonderful gardens.  The building itself really is impressive.  I think next time I would like to sample a stay over!
